Emergency Dentist in Edgware

A dental emergency can happen at any time — and when it does, prompt treatment can make all the difference. At Stag Lane Dental, we understand that pain, swelling or a broken tooth cannot wait. We offer same-day and urgent dental appointments for patients in Edgware and the surrounding areas, ensuring you receive the care you need as quickly as possible.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental problem requires immediate attention, but the following situations should always be treated as urgent:

  • Severe toothache or throbbing pain that does not subside
  • A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth
  • A cracked, fractured or broken tooth
  • A lost filling or crown causing sensitivity or discomfort
  • Swelling of the face, jaw or gums — which may indicate infection or abscess
  • Bleeding from the mouth that does not stop after gentle pressure
  • A dental abscess with pain, pus or a bad taste in the mouth
  • Soft tissue injuries to the lips, tongue or cheeks

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

If you are experiencing a dental emergency, contact Stag Lane Dental immediately. While you wait for your appointment, there are some steps you can take to manage your symptoms:

  • Knocked-out tooth: Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root). Rinse gently with milk or saline and, if possible, place it back in the socket or keep it in milk. Seek treatment within 30 to 60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.
  • Toothache: Rinse with warm salt water and take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the packaging. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum.
  • Swelling or abscess: Apply a cool compress to the outside of your cheek. Do not attempt to drain the abscess yourself. Seek urgent care as infections can spread rapidly.
  • Lost crown or filling: Dental cement, available from pharmacies, can temporarily protect the exposed tooth until your appointment.

Our Approach to Emergency Dental Care

At Stag Lane Dental, patient wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. Our experienced dental team will assess your situation promptly, provide pain relief where necessary, and discuss all appropriate treatment options with you in a clear and honest manner — in line with General Dental Council (GDC) standards of patient-centred care.

We will always explain your diagnosis, the proposed treatment, any alternatives available, and the likely outcomes before proceeding. You will never feel rushed or pressured into making a decision.

When to Call 999 or Go to A&E

Some symptoms require immediate emergency medical care rather than a dental appointment. Please call 999 or go to your nearest Accident & Emergency department if you experience:

  • Severe facial swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing
  • Difficulty opening your mouth fully
  • High fever alongside facial swelling
  • Significant trauma to the face, jaw or head
